Menu For Hope # 6

What is Menu for Hope?

Menu for Hope is an annual fund-raising campaign hosted by a group of food-bloggers in the month of December and it has proudly entered its 6th year now. The idea was conceived by Chez pim, 5 years ago to raise funds for people effected by tsunami-hit South-east Asia. In the past three years, Menu for Hope have raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars to help the WFP end world hunger.

This year, Menu for Hope is in support of the UN World Food Programme, especially highlighting the new initiative Purchase for Progress (P4P). P4P enables smallholder and low-income farmers to supply food to WFP’s global operation, helping farmers improves their practices and putting more cash directly into their pockets in return for their crops. This will immensely help their local economy by creating jobs and income locally.

We, as fellow food bloggers can make an impact  and every dollar donated will make a huge difference to a farmer in thelow income countries to buy his own seeds and produce food locally..ultimately making them self-reliant.

Here are the rules for participation:

1. Use this Menu Hope Donation Form to view the master list of bid items and for a simple 3-step checkout process.

Each $10 you donate will give you one raffle ticket toward a bid item of your choice. For example, a donation of $50 can be 2 tickets for EU01 and 3 tickets for EU02. This would be entered as “2xEU01, 3xEU02″.

2. Please check the box to allow us to see your email address so that we can contact you in case you win. Your email address will not be shared with anyone.

The Menu for Hope raffle runs until December 25, 2009 (only 4 days left) and the results will be announced on January 28, 2010 at Chez Pim.

Let us all join hands and donate as much as we can to support such a great cause.

until next time,

Proven ways to reduce stress...

...this post is like a keep-sake for me...a reminder that life is never perfect and is ALWAYS a roller-coaster ride. So many people have asked me why I am blogging less frequently these days.. Well, the answer is kinda unknown to me too.. I guess, my life has changed (still is changing) so much in last few months that I am still trying to get a hang of it.. When the right time arrives, I will definitely update you guys with all of it.. till then.. :)))

As I was having my evening tea today, my roommate gave me a pamphlet which had the following 'proven stress reducers' and I thought instead of taking a xerox of it and (for sure) loosing it.. I thought why not chronicle them here on my blog... it might be useful to somebody out there and to me too!.. So, here it goes..

1. Get up 15 mins earlier in the morning. The inevitable morning mishaps will be less stressful.

2. Prepare for the morning the evening before. Set the breakfast table, make lunches, put out the clothes you plan to wear etc.

3. Don't rely on our memory. Write down appointment times, when to pick up the laundry, when library books are due etc. "The palest ink is better than the most retentive memory!" ~ Old Chinese Proverb.

4. Do nothing which after being done, leads you to tell a lie.

5. Make duplicates of all keys. Bury a house key in a secret spot in the garden and carry a duplicate car key in your wallet, apart from your key ring.

6. Practice preventive maintenance. Your car, appliances, home AND relationships will be less likely to break down/fall apart "at the worst possible moment."

7. Be prepared to wait. A paperback can make a wait in a post office line almost pleasant. :)

8. Procrastination is stressful. Whatever you want to do tomorrow, do today! whatever you want to do today, do it now.

9. Plan ahead. Don't let the gas tank get below one-quarter full; keep a well-stocked "emergency shelf" of home staples; don't wait until you're down to your last bus token or postage stamp to buy more etc.

10. Don't put up with something that doesn't work right. If your alarm clock, wallet, shoe laces, windshield wipers - whatever - are a constant aggravation, get them fixed or get new ones.

11. Allow 15 minutes of extra time to get to appointments. Plan to arrive at an airport one hour before domestic departures.

12. Eliminate (or restrict) the amount of caffeine in your diet.

13. Always set up contingency plans, "just in case." ("If for some reason either of us is delayed, here?s what we?ll do?" kind of thing. Or, "If we get split up in the shopping center, here?s where we?ll meet.")

14. Pollyanna-Power! For every one thing that goes wrong, there are probably 10 or 50 or 100 blessings. Count ?em!

15. Ask questions. Taking a few moments to repeat back directions, what someone expects of you, etc., can save hours. (The old "the hurrieder I go, the behinder I get, " idea.)

16. Say "No!" Saying "no" to extra projects, social activities, and invitations you know you don?t have the time or energy for takes practice, self-respect, and a belief that everyone, everyday, needs quiet time to relax and be alone.

17. Unplug your phone. Want to take a long bath, meditate, sleep, or read without interruption? Drum up the courage to temporarily disconnect. (The possibility of there being a terrible emergency in the next hour or so is almost nil.) Or use an answering machine.

18. Turn "needs" into preferences. Our basic physical needs translate into food, water, and keeping warm. Everything else is a preference. Don?t get attached to preferences.

19. Simplify, simplify, simplify?

20. Make friends with nonworriers. Nothing can get you into the habit of worrying faster than associating with chronic worrywarts.

21. Get up and stretch periodically if your job requires that you sit for extended periods.

22. Wear earplugs. If you need to find quiet at home, pop in some earplugs.

23. Get enough sleep. If necessary, use an alarm clock to remind you to go to bed.

24. Create order out of chaos. Organize your home and workspace so that you always know exactly where things are. Put things away where they belong and you won?t have to go through the stress of losing things.

25. When feeling stressed, most people tend to breathe in short, shallow breaths. When you breathe like this, stale air is not expelled, oxidation of the tissues is incomplete, and muscle tension frequently results. Check your breathing throughout the day, and before, during, and after high-pressure situations. If you find your stomach muscles are knotted and your breathing is shallow, relax all your muscles and take several deep, slow breaths. Note how, when you?re relaxed, both your abdomen and chest expand when you breathe.

26. Writing your thoughts and feelings down (in a journal, or on paper to be thrown away) can help you clarify things and can give you a renewed perspective.

27. Try the following yoga technique whenever you feel the need to relax. Inhale deeply through you nose to the count of eight. Then, with lips puckered, exhale very slowly through your mouth to the count of 16, or for as long as you can. Concentrate on the long sighing sound and feel the tension dissolve. Repeat 10 times.

28. Inoculate yourself against a feared event. Example: before speaking in public, take time to go over every part of the experience in your mind. Imagine what you?ll wear, what the audience will look like, how you will present your talk, what the questions will be and how you will answer them, etc. Visualize the experience the way you would have it be. You?ll likely find that when the time comes to make the actual presentation, it will be "old hat" and much of your anxiety will have fled.

29. When the stress of having to get a job done gets in the way of getting the job done, diversion ? a voluntary change in activity and/or environment ? may be just what you need.

30. Talk it out. Discussing your problems with a trusted friend can help clear your mind of confusion so you can concentrate on problem solving.

31. One of the most obvious ways to avoid unnecessary stress is to select an environment (work, home, leisure) which is in line with your personal needs and desires. If you hate desk jobs, don?t accept a job which requires that you sit at a desk all day. If you hate to talk politics, don?t associate with people who love to talk politics, etc.

32. Learn to live one day at a time.

33. Every day, do something you really enjoy.

34. Add an ounce of love to everything you do.

35. Take a hot bath or shower (or a cool one in summertime) to relieve tension.

36. Do something for somebody else.

37. Focus on understanding rather than on being understood; on loving rather than on being loved.

39. Do something that will improve your appearance. Looking better can help you feel better.

40. Schedule a realistic day. Avoid the tendency to schedule back-to-back appointments; allow time between appointments for a breathing spell.

41. Become more flexible. Some things are worth not doing perfectly and some issues are well to compromise upon.

42. Eliminate destructive self-talk: "I'm too old to?," "I'm too fat to?," etc.

43. Use your weekend time for a change of pace. If you work week is slow and patterned, make sure there is action and time for spontaneity built into your weekends. If your work week is fast-paced and full of people and deadlines, seek peace and solitude during your days off. Feel as if you aren?t accomplishing anything at work? Tackle a job on the weekend which you can finish to your satisfaction.

44. "Worry about the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves." That's another way of saying: take care of the todays as best you can and the yesterdays and the tomorrows will take care of themselves.

45. Do one thing at a time. When you are with someone, be with that person and with no one or nothing else. When you are busy with a project, concentrate on doing that project and forget about everything else you have to do.

46. Allow yourself time..everyday.. for privacy, quiet, and introspection.

47. If an especially unpleasant task faces you, do it early in the day and get it over with; then the rest of your day will be free of anxiety.

48. Learn to delegate responsibility to capable others.

49. Don't forget to take a lunch break. Try to get away from your desk or work area in body and mind, even if it?s just for 15 or 20 minutes.

50. Forget about counting to 10. Count to 1,000 before doing something or saying anything that could make matters worse.

51. Have a forgiving view of events and people. Accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world.

52. Have an optimistic view of the world. Believe that most people are doing the best they can.

Friday Humour...

-- A married woman writes to a technical support guy --

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and I noticed a distinct slowdown in the overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as NEWS 5.0, MONEY 3.0 and CRICKET 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.

Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

Signed,
Married Woman

Tech Support Reply -

Dear Married M'am,

First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system.

Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme.html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5.

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Please note that Beer 6.1 1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-In-Law 1.0 under any circumstances (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly.

You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance.

We recommend: Cooking 3.0 and Hot Looks 7.7.

Good Luck Madam!

Donate for a Heart - A fundraising campaign

Srivalli of 'Cooking 4 all Seasons' is organising a fund-raising campaign - 'Donate for a Heart' to help Anita Lakshmi, who is sufferring from coronary heart disease.

In Valli's words -

Lakshmi is 28 years old and suffers from Coronary Artery disease. She has two children, aged 3 & 6 and was undergoing treatment in Vijaya Hospital. The entire operation and other costs will go over 5 -6 lakhs (about 15000 USD). Lakshmi needs to be operated within 5-6 months. She is currently prescribed heavy dosage of medicines to sustain. It all depends on how well she responds till then to the medicines. Her health is deteriorating. So we are not sure how stable her condition is.

It was an emotionally moving experience when I visited them. I was daunted by their helplessness and the hope that was lingering somewhere in their look. The children were happy getting a visitor and even got excited posing for a picture. But I am sure the little ones didn't know how serious their mom's condition is. There are many in this condition in India. But we really can't help them all. We can help only those near to us. I hope you will find in your heart to help this cause and give those little children a hope to live!

It a sincere plea to one and all to help and contribute to the event in whatever way they can. You can use the below chip in widget to get your contribution paid safely through Paypal.

My Fridge Magnets...

Until a month back, I was not a great fan for magnets (or) any kind of souvenirs (or) keepsakes. I know it brings loads of memories with them, but was not particularly fond of a them.

A trip to Atlantic City changed me!..you can see check out what I got from there in the second pic!

.... then I got some veggies.....then a 'Pooh' magnet.. I got the 'Mood Setter' as a free gift from my friend, and I absolutely love it! As soon as I enter my kitchen, the first thing I do is to set my 'mood'..it so much fun and thought provoking too!! *wink*.

When Veda announced her 'Fridge Magnets' event, I was very excited and was meaning to show off couple of fridge magnets.. I am still in lookout for some more.. for now here are some of them ..:))

Fresh Veggies!

L-R: a souvenir from the beautiful Atlantic City, USA; I love Poooh! magnet; 'How are u?': Mood setter.

For Bri....

This is an appeal on behalf of a group of food bloggers who are friends of Briana Brownlow @ Figs With Bri.

Bri was diagnosed with breast cancer two and half years ago. A mastectomy, chemotherapy and two years of relatively good health later, the cancer is back. It has metastasized to other parts of her body. At the age of 15, Bri lost her 41-year old mother to the disease. Now, she’s waging her own war against breast cancer. More about it here.

She is going through intensive chemo and other treatments and needs to focus single-mindedly on healing and finding what treatment works best for her. Her health insurance, unfortunately, does not cover holistic alternatives which she would like to try. Bri and her husband Marc have enough on their plates right now in addition to worrying about her medical bills.

The team organizing the JUNE edition of CLICK at Jugalbandi has organised a fundraiser to help Bri and her family meet her out-of-pocket medical costs for ONE YEAR.

CLICK is a monthly theme-based photography contest hosted by Jugalbandi. This month’s theme is: YELLOW for Bri.

Yellow is the colour of Hope. Through the work of the LiveStrong Foundation, it has also come to signify the fight against cancer.

..............Get Well Soon Brii!!..All our prayers are with you.

All the entries can be viewed HERE. The deadline for entries is June 30, 2008. The fundraiser will extend until July 15, 2008.

The target amount is 12,000 U.S. dollars. We appeal to our fellow bloggers and readers to help us achieve this. Bri deserves a chance to explore all options, even if her insurance company thinks otherwise.

There’s a raffle with exciting prizes on offer. After viewing the list, you may make your donation HERE or at the Chip-In button on any participating site.

Your donation can be made securely through credit card or Pay Pal and goes directly to Bri’s account.

This month’s photo contest also has some prizes. Details HERE.

You can support this campaign by donating to the fundraiser, by participating in CLICK: the photo event, and by publicizing this campaign.

This is my earnest appeal to chip in, whatever you can, as I did and let the world know that - 'WE DO CARE!'

Love U Bri...and May God Bless You with Good Health.

Blogger Appreciation Day - Thank U all!

April 14th is [unofficially] celebrated as 'Blogger Appreciation Day'.

In Darren's words,

I’ve been chatting with a few bloggers of late who’ve been feeling a little down in the dumps about their blogging - so perhaps everyone could do with a little lift.

Lets spend today doing a few random acts of kindness and encouragement for our fellow bloggers.

I’m not writing this in the hope of getting more emails myself (I’ve got my share for today already) - but instead want to encourage you to take a moment to email another blogger and to thank them for something that you’ve appreciated about what they’ve done lately. In a sense it’s a ‘Pay it Forward’ exercise.

We’re in it together, blogging is about collaboration and together going further than we can by ourselves - so why not help another blogger today by shooting them a word of encouragement, a pep talk, a congratulations, an idea to help them improve or some other positive constructive message. Better still, do it publicly on your blog and tell the world about another blogger who you appreciate.”

- an excerpt from his post earlier today.

One thing I would truly cherish from my 8-month long blogging is my friendship with this wonderful person, so sweet, so lovable that she even managed to write an impromptu poem on me. Thank you sweety!

People come and go
The magic of life is so

But rare few make a mark
And shine they do among the surroundings dark

One among the few is you
Oh Siri - U r the best amongst my friends - so wonderful and soooooo true!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for brightening up my dull, boring days with her contagious smile (or should I say giggle!..:D).

Thanks Sailu for letting us all know about such a day - an entire day dedicated to say 'Thank You' to all you wonderful folks out there who appreciate my work with your sweet comments, invite to your blogs and effortlessly whip up appetizing dishes for all of us - every single day.

Wishing all of my co-bloggers a very happy and blissful life ahead and Happy Sri Rama Navami. May God shine all of his blessings on us.

Happy Sri Rama Navami

When the evil forces reign supreme, the Lord will come to the rescue and set things right. Sri Rama Navami marks the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. From Ugadi for the next 9 days, we celebrate the 'Vasantha Navarathri'. Sri Rama Navami marks its conclusion. The goodies we typically make on this day are Panakam, Vadapappu, Buttermilk and Panchamrutham.

On such an auspicious day, I wish you all a very Happy Sri Rama Navami.

My Weekend ' E' Accolades!

Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I may not forget you.

~ William Arthur

Its raining awards in blogosphere these days.. and I see almost everyday, friends getting awards and passing them to the ones who motivated or appreciated them the most!

Cham of Spice Club felt the same about me and she rated my blog as Excellent'. Wow, thats one superlative I never associated with my blog as I think there is a long way for me to go and many more things to learn. Everyday is a learning day for me and love the variety of posts I come across. All Thanks to my innovative and enthusiastic blogger friends.

Thanks Cham for considering me and I am so glad that u liked my recipes and stories.

.....Now that I have to pass this on to people who I think are 'Excellent', I have about 28 choices (Yes..28!)..and each one of them is very dear to my heart!

To choose some, with great humility, I consider these blogs as EXCELLENT...

Indira .. Her recipes at Mahanandi are loved by all.and her efforts towards Indian Food Blogging are commendable and truly insipirational. As a special mention, her interview with the authors of "Cooking At Home with Pedatha" touched me a lot and also who can forget Indira's exemplary dedication in making the FAHC Campaign a huge success. Thanks Indira!

Lathamma and Lakshmi.... What can I say about the dynamic duo - Lathamma and her daughter Lakshmi. Just that - I LOVE U both!. Their authentic Tamilian Iyengar recipes at (...very aptly named )- 'The Yum Blog' are to die for. They are loved by all and the most unique blog I came across and definitely Lathamma is one of my dearest soul here in this virtual food blogosphere!

Dhivya .... One best thing that happened in my 5 months of Food Blogging is my friendship with Dhivya who is an expert of organizing a Culinary Bazaar. I think the sole reason that we became bestest of friends in such a short span of time is that - "We both are as crazy as one can imagine!".. She is also an avid cook who comes up with such novel and yummy recipes which amaze me every time!.. Thanks Dhivya for being so good and Krrazzy!!!

Viji...She was the one who commented on my blog first (.. so I have some special sentiments attached to her...), since then she has been a constant source of inspiration to cook more n more!. Her blog is the first place I often land up if I am in a mood of experimenting and mind you, all of them turn out delightful and scrumptious. Thanks to Viji, for making us a part of the delectable adventures of your kitchen!

So, these are my weekend 'E' Accolades. take care n Have a great Sunday ahead!

Love is in the Air...

Your eyes say what I want to know...
Your cheeky smile makes me glow.
What power do you possess that makes me melt...
Because of every word spoken, every touch felt.

Every awake moment is spent thinking of you...
Every second apart feels so wasted, makes me blue.
The warmth from your enclosed arms is a haven...
Gives me unparalleled security - a feeling of heaven.

The words which I want to say have not yet been found...
Every thought, every feel so deep and so profound.
But on this day, to let u know what I am thinking will just suffice
Cos you just got to see how much I love you through my "lovestruck" eyes........

- written by this sweet friend of mine...:D

Happy Valentine's Day dearies!

Remembering a Mahatma....

"Just an old man in a loincloth in distant India: Yet when he died, humanity wept."

January 30th, 1948

It was this day in the year 1948 that Mahatma Gandhi, an icon for ahimsa ( non-violence) was assassinated in the capital of India, New Delhi. The tragedy occurred as the gaunt old man walked to a prayer-meeting and was engulfed by one of history's great ironies - a life-long pacifist and promoter of non-violence struck down by an assassin's bullet.

and here I share with you all a story of an eye witness - Vincent Sheean, an American Reporter.

"I got a taxi and went out to Birla House in time for the prayer-meeting. This time I was alone. I stationed my taxi under a tree opposite the gate of Birla House and walked down the drive to the prayer-ground. It was not yet five o'clock and people were still streaming in on foot, in cars and with tongas. As I came on to the prayer-ground at the end of the garden I ran into Bob Stimson, the Delhi correspondent of the B.B.C. We fell into talk and I told him about the journey to Amritsar and what had taken place there. It was unusual to see any representatives of the press at the prayer-meeting; Bob explained that he had submitted some questions to the Mahatma for the B.B.C. and thought he might as well stay for the prayers since he was on the premises. He looked at his watch and said: 'Well, this is strange. Gandhi's late. He's practically never late.'

We both looked at our watches again. It was 5:12 by my watch when Bob said: 'There he is.' We stood near the corner of the wall, on the side of the garden where he was coming, and watched the evening light fall on his shining dark-brown head. He did not walk under the arbor this evening but across the grass, in the open lawn on the other side of the flower-beds. (There was the arbored walk, and a strip of lawn, and a long strip of flower-bed, and then the open lawn.)

It was one of those shining Delhi evenings, not at all warm but alight with the promise of spring. I felt well and happy and grateful to be here. Bob and I stood idly talking, I do not remember about what, and watching the Mahatma advance toward us over the grass, leaning lightly on two of 'the girls,' with two or three other members of his 'family' (family or followers) behind them. I read afterward that he had sandals on his feet but I did not see them. To me it looked as if he walked barefoot on the grass. It was not a warm evening and he was wrapped in homespun shawls. He passed by us on the other side and turned to ascend the four or five brick steps which led to the terrace or prayer-ground.

Here, as usual, there was a clump of people, some of whom were standing and some of whom had gone on their knees or bent low before him. Bob and I turned to watch - we were perhaps ten feet away from the steps-but the clump of people cut off our view of the Mahatma now; he was so small. Then I heard four small, dull, dark explosions. 'What's that?' I said to Bob in sudden horror. 'I don't know,' he said. I remember that he grew pale in an instant. 'Not the Mahatma!' I said, and then I knew.

Inside my own head there occurred a wavelike disturbance which I can only compare to a storm at sea - wind and wave surging tremendously back and forth. I remember all this distinctly; I do not believe that I lost consciousness even for a moment,
although there may have been an instant or two of half-consciousness. I recoiled upon the brick wall and leaned against it, bent almost in two. I felt the consciousness of the Mahatma leave me then-I know of no other way of expressing this: he left me. ...The storm inside my head continued for some little time-minutes, perhaps; I have no way of reckoning.

...lt was during this time, apparently, that many things happened: a whole external series of events took place in my immediate neighborhood - a few yards away - and I was unaware of them. A doctor was found; the police took charge; the body of the Mahatma was, carried away; the crowd melted, perhaps urged to do so by the police. I saw none of this. The last I saw of the Mahatma he was advancing over the grass in the evening light, approaching the steps. When I finally took my fingers out of my mouth and stood up, dry-eyed, there were police and soldiers and not many people, and there was Bob Stimson. He was rather breathless; he had gone somewhere to telephone to the B.B.C. He came with me down the steps to the lawn, where we walked up and down beside the flower-bed for a while. The room with the glass doors and windows, by the rose garden at the end of the arbor, had a crowd of people around it. Many were weeping. The police were endeavoring to make them leave. Bob could not tell me anything except that the Mahatma had been taken inside that room. On the following day he told me that he had seen him carried away and that the khadi which he wore was heavily stained with blood."

Vincent Sheean was an American reporter and author who had covered trouble spots around the world in the years prior to and during World War II. In 1947, Sheean traveled to India and became a disciple of Gandhi in an attempt to find meaning in the violent and disruptive events he had witnessed during his years of reporting.
