[Eating Out in New York City] Jack's Wife Freda | NYC Restaurant

This post was supposed to see the light of day many months ago. I blame the sudden move to Bay Area and crazy aftermath for its delay. Now that the humdrum of everyday life is slowly settling in and am getting used to a new routine, I want to talk about this amazing experience with you all. Though it happened sometime ago, the memories of it are still fresh and if I ever get a chance, I want to do all over again with my favorite gal pal K, who also happens to be my sister-in-law and a passionate foodie like me. Her cooking skills are well known in our circle of friends and she also unabashedly admits her intense love for the City of Dreams - NYC. I couldn't have asked for a better buddy to spend my Saturday with and roam around the hustling streets of New York City.

Why Jack's Wife Freda?: For that you need read this TimeOut's article on 12 drool-worthy brunch dishes you need to try in NYC. Instantly, we knew Jack's Wife Freda would be a perfect choice for brunch and is to be definitely added to our itinerary. After some back & forth emails, a jam-packed schedule was planned - starting with Union Square Market, Chinatown, walking Brooklyn Bridge end-to-end and then finally to squeeze in few moments to go to pasta heaven - Eatly.

05.07.2013 | Week 27 | Siri's Eat Outs | La Cantina, Hyderabad

If you ask me what would be my last meal on earth? I would say this is it. That's how much I love Mexican cuisine. So, when we discovered La Cantina restaurant in the plush Novotel Hyderabad, we were ecstatic (is an understatement). The food did live up to our expectations and my personal favorite was this Tortilla Soup which I was eating after a loong loong time!. We also ordered Vegetarian Enchilada, which was ok and Spinach Cheese balls which were perfect. All in all, a nice quaint place to visit if you are in the city and if you love Mexican food as we do.

Hyderabad Blogger's Table | Siri's Eat Outs | Thai Pavilion at Vivanta Taj, Begumpet

Source: Image
It was a hot Saturday afternoon when the first ever meal was served at Thai Pavillion, Vivanta Taj for Hyderabad Blogger's Table, an initiative by Sid of Chef At Large. Its literally a bunch of people who are mad about food and love writing about it. It feels so great to be a part of such great company. Delhi Blogger's Table is already super popular and now its time for Hyderabad to shine. Right now there are just two of us - myself and my blogging pal - Arundati of Escapades in the madness. I wish and hope more bloggers join us in coming days. Do you know anybody who writes about food and is from Hyderabad? Drop their details in the comment section and I will try to get them into the table. I can't guarantee though as the group is pretty particular about the quality than the sheer numbers.

Siri's Eat Outs | Restaurant Visits: The Egg Factory, Bangalore

The Egg Factory, Bangalore
Location: St.Marks Road Bengaluru, Karnataka 560001
Phone: 080 4211 0041
Twitter: @theeggfactory
Recommendations: M`enage`a trois, Burritos, Fried Egg Sambal, Quesadilla

There is no overt theatricality when it comes to food served at The Egg Factory (TEF), nestled on the buzzing St. Marks Road in Bangalore. The name says it all. It is a winsome tribute to all dishes made with the humble “egg”. Every dish on the scrapbook-like menu looks and tastes as enticing as it sounds. And a special mention about the ambiance of the restaurant itself. The tables are wide, wooden, and provide a comfortable stage for the food. It renders a beach-like casual setting where you quickly drop by to grab a bite in your flip-flops. ;-)

For me, Restaurants are always more than just the food served - ambiance, service, how friendly and knowledgeable the waiters are, how fast the service is, make up the whole experience. Served with good ingredients, prepared simply, unadorned, TEF scores well on the food and ambience fronts, but sadly it stumbles a little on the service aspect. With a seating capacity of thirty five and just three waiters, the service was not upto the mark. When this issue was raised with the management, they patiently listened to the feedback. Hopefully they will take note of it and have some quick, agile and cheerful waiters around.

M`enage `a trois

Here, there are more than 60 egg-based dishes served primarily from Indian and Mexican cuisines, each succulently paired with respective sauces and condiments.

It is a Sunday afternoon when we, four hungry people arrived at TEF. Our first dish, M`enage`a trois may sound like a tongue twister but is a delight indeed for the tastebuds on the tongue, with a stuffing made out of a variety of veggies, wrapped in a thick omelete and finished with a tangy, delicately flavored pepper sauce on the top. It is delectable and vanished from our table in the blink of an eye.

Cilantro Chilly Sauce Frittata
However, the Cilantro Chilly Sauce Frittata is rather disappointing. It does not come close to the appetizing description on the menu –(“Potato, Zucchini and Feta topped with Cilantro Chilly Sauce”) and is merely a plain omelete smeared with a rather salty cilantro sauce with buttered, garlic bread on the side. It is worth a miss.

The Quesadilla is simple yet immensely satisfying. It is s essentially a perky egg salad folded in a tortilla, served with cream and salsa. A must try if you are a fan of Mexican cuisine.

Quesadilla

Fried Egg Sambal, a classic dish in Malaysian and Singaporean cuisines. It can be made a million ways (here is one way of making it) and the one served at TEF is made just right and an absolute must-try. It is a convergence of oriental flavours with onions, tomato and spices. It comes with a serving of rice on the side and is a meal in itself.

Fried Egg Sambal
Who doesn’t love Burritos? It is quintessential in Mexican cuisine and very popular as they are easy to grab and eat. At TEF, scrambled eggs are used as a stuffing into a tortilla with cream and salsa. The harmony of flavors works well and tastefully created.

Burritos
Anyone familiar with Kerala cuisine would have certainly heard about – Malabar Egg Roast which is a curry combo served with 2 baby parathas, rice, a raw mango salad and pickle. The parathas are chewy but the egg roast itself has an alluring shade of golden gravy because of subtle spices and with a taste not too intense for the palate.

Malabar Egg Roast
To end your meal on a happy and sweet note, try TEF’s French Toast stuffed with Cream Cheese and Blueberry Preserve . Revel in its incredible play of flavors with creaminess from the cream cheese, fruity goodness from the blueberries and the sweetness from maple syrup which is served on the side. It works splendidly as a light, wholesome dessert. Can I add my mouth waters at the very mention of it! :-)

French Toast stuffed with Cream Cheese and Blueberry Preserve
The beverage section at TEF is quite limited. Their Morning Burst - banana, orange juice pureed in yogurt and milk is simple and nothing out of the ordinary and Chlorophyll fix, a green concoction of basil, mint and soda. The latter works for those who love a herby feel as basil and mint are known for their pungency.

Morning Burst
Chlorophyll fix
Final Words: The folks at TEF definitely need to work on their service. Nevertheless, if you are in a mood to have some delicious egg-y dishes, look no further. Head to this quaint place for a taste of delectable food. Once finished, you will sink in a little deeper into the seat with your stomach and hearts filled with contentment. Enjoy!

Siri's Eat Outs | Restaurant Visits: Jalpaan, Bangalore

Note: This is not a paid-promotion. All the views and opinions expressed in this post are my own and does not represent the restaurant in any manner..

It has been on our minds to do Bangalore restaurant reviews since I have moved back here. Finally, we took the plunge and chose Jalpaan to be our first outing.

Located in busy Jayanagar 7th block, Jalpaan is a cosy little place which serves Indian, Italian and some Oriental fare. We went for a Sunday afternoon lunch and the place was almost packed with hungry diners. With some beautiful beaded drapes and carved headboards separate seating nooks, the place looked nice and well ventilated. Here is a glimpse of the table where we were seated -

Now, lets jump into the food part. Shall we? The one thing Jalpaan is very famous for is - its bubbling pot of goodness "Cheese Fondue". Mads tasted this before and gave a big thumbs-up. Since then, I was so eager to have it myself and Oh boy! it was an amazing experience.

...what's not to love about - cheese, herbs and that too set low on a burner so that you can slowly melt into its gooey-goodness. It is available in two flavors - The Original and Fondue Margherita

We ordered Fondue Margherita and here is a short description what it is -

Classic cheese fondue mixed with Italian herbs, ground sun-dried tomatoes & pesto served with grilled foccacia croutons, skin-on potato wedges, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, mushrooms & peas tossed with Italian herb sauce.

Now, isn't the description by itself is mouth watering. Trust me, the entire, elaborative set up which costs INR 399 was truly a treat to our senses. It easily serves two people and I am sure you will fight for that last spoonful of herb cheese lurking at the very bottom. A high probability for a Fondue-Fork-War might happen. :-).

Grilled Focaccia Croutons and Potato Wedges, ready to be dipped into the cheese fondue

Broccoli, Carrots, Cherry Tomatoes coated with one of the best pesto sauces I ever had!

Though we were already full by the cheese fondue, we were determined to taste more. Just one dish is not enough to rate a restaurant. Isn't it.

California Quesadilla
We moved on and ordered a California Quesadilla. Stuffed with red, green and yellow peppers, onions and zucchini, it tasted yum. :D Served with a relish and sour cream on the side, which tasted more like hung-curd to me.

Peppers, Onions and Cheese - California Quesadilla
Dish # 3 was a Fried Chilli Baby Corn lightly coated with sesame seeds. The latter provided a nice crunch to the appetizer and amdist of all our chatter, it was gone in minutes.

Fried Chilli Babycorn coated with sesame seeds
Their menu was quite long with many choices covering across 3 cuisines. As we were not able to decide what to try next, we asked the manager to send in their best signature dishes, the ones it is hard to get anywhere else.

Hence came "Potli Biryani"...

Potli Biryani
Doesn't the dish look super cute and fancy. It is like a laddle-full of biryani stuffed in a poori. ;-). It was quite impressive how the waiter chopped off the top of this potli and served us the biryani inside. But, it tasted too tomato-ey for us. All we could taste is just the tomato flavor mixed in with rice & some spices.

As the wise say - "All things potlis that look good, doesn't necessarily have to taste good".

Sizzler Dum Aloo Makai Biryani with Raita
But the saying doesn't go well with all the dishes, I must say. Lets talk about this Sizzler Dum Aloo Makai Biryani for a second. It truly looks colorful and tastes even better than that. Served with some mixed raita, it was moderately spicy. Having tasted many hyderabadi biryanis before, this definitely gets a big nod from my side.

If the folks of Jalpaan are reading this - We have a little feedback for you. Wrap this sizzler biryani into that potli above. I am pretty much sure, it will be a winner and that's when a true justice to potli is done ;-)!

Lal Mirch Ka Paratha
When tasted as-is, this Lal Mirch Ka Paratha, is just like as the name suggests - chilli powder rolled into a paratha. If you are ordering this, I would strongly recommend to go with a milder side-dish like daal tadka to compensate for the spiciness in the paratha.

Jantar Mantar
Jantar-Mantar was the next that we tasted and sadly it was too oily for me. Not a great pairing with the lal mirch paratha either. All I can say is - it tastes like many other mixed vegetable dry curries that we get out there but I like the pomegranate seeds topping.

Life is uncertain.  Eat dessert first. ~ Ernestine Ulmer

...but we saved the best for the last. Litchi Ki Teheri, with its payasam-like-consistency and topped with chopped nuts was out-of-this-world. Definitely, there couldn't be a better ending than this. A must try :D

Litchi Ki Teheri
After tasting so much food, we would definitely need some of these - ;-)

My Recommendations: Fondue Margherita, Sizzler Dum Aloo Makai Biryani, Litchi Ki Teheri

Siri's Eat Outs | Signature Monsoon Menu at Shiro, U B City, Bangalore

"There's always a period of curious fear between the first sweet-smelling breeze and the time when the rain comes cracking down."

~ Don Delillo

..and monsoons have arrived in Bangalore. So, has the Siganture Monsoon Menu at the very famous Shiro restaurant, well known for its Oriental cuisine on Vittal Mallya Road (the same says it all), Bangalore. In my opinion, creating as entire menu on just Stir Frying is quite challenging, but if executed properly its tantalizing flavors of hot, spicy, tangy, pungent and sweet will remain with you forever. My experience at Shiro was mixed. There were some dishes which were truly spectacular and some were a little disappointing. Also I thought there was also an issue with consistency. Meaning, it doesn't matter how many times you order the same dish, it is of paramount importance that it tastes the same.

Having said that, I want YOU to be the judge because I think when it comes to *taste* and *flavour*, they very subjective as each of our palettes are different. I am here only to introduce the menu to you all and give a slight sneak-peek about what are they, how do they look like, all-in-all what was my personal experience and last but not the least, the "Star Dish of the Day" which is an absolute must-have (according to me) and not-to-be-missed.

Before we jump into the food part, let me show you around the restaurant first (if its your first-time-visit to Shiro). With its huge sculptures, the interiors are just magnificent. Look at the one below. Isn't it just beautiful and sets a perfect mood instantly.

..and once you cross this, you will enter an open-top-seating-area. With plenty of cool breeze, the ambiance cannot get any better.

Shiro is also known for its sassy cocktails....

Now that you have all seen how the restaurant looks like, lets begin the food-tasting part. Shall we? They had some good options for both Vegetarians and Non-Vegetarians, which was a bit of relief as I had many bad experiences in fine dining restaurants, where I could order only 1 or 2 out of the entire menu. Thank you Shiro for thinking of we, vegetarians too. :-)

1. Tofu Cubes with Spicy Korean Bean Paste.

I love *tofu* and it has a tendency to absorb any flavors it is added into. Because it is soft in texture, it is important to treat it gingerly. This dish with the spicy korean bean paste was delicious and spice levels were just right. A great start, I must say.

Tofu Cubes with Spicy Korean Bean Paste
2. Hung Shao Green Beans

I have had many versions of green beans. Some were just fantabulous. Some were ok. Some were really really bad. This Hung Shao Green Beans was ok. There is nothing wrong with the dish, but it lacks that WOW factor for me.

Hung Shao Green Beans
3. Aubergine stir fried in coconut, basil and chillies

Unfortunately this is my least favorite dish of the day. Stay tuned, the most favorite is right down the post. You know why I didn't like it? not because of the taste. The first time it was served, it was good. What not to love about coconut milk and basil. When we ordered the same for a second helping, the aubergines were uncooked, which disappointed me as I was really looking forward to taste it again. Consistency is the key in running a successful restaurant.

Aubergine stir fried in coconut, basil and chillies
4. Assorted Veg Stir Fry with Chilli Mustard Sauce

Mustard is one spice which is very strong-in-taste. It works differently when paired with delicately steamed veggies and when coated to meat. I had with some assorted veggies, except for broccoli, rest all were delicious. I am sure its meat counterpart tasted much better as I saw couple of non-veg friends going for a second helping.

Assorted Veg Stir Fry with Chilli Mustard Sauce
5. Mushrooms & Babycorn Stir fried with Thai Spices

I was in a place called "Yummyville" (a fictional heavenly place created by me where it is just ME and the decadent food in front. ;-)) after having the next 2 dishes. Simply fantastic. Perfectly executed and I was longing for more. :-)

Mushrooms & Babycorn Stir fried with Thai Spices
6. Potatoes Stir Fried with Chilli Sesame Sauce

Would you believe if I say, we ordered this dish thrice? It was simply delectable. The chilli-sesame sauce was so so good with the potatoes. I would definitely go back for this and for the next one.

Potatoes Stir Fried with Chilli Sesame Sauce
..and finally the award - "Star Dish of the Day" goes to..ahem ahem ..Green Mango & Jasmine rice with Tofu. Green mango with what? Yes, with Tofu. I personally never had such a combination before and this was one dish which bowled me over, with it pleasant taste and little tanginess from the mango. Very very flavoruful dish and I don't even remember how much I ate. :-)

Green Mango & Jasmine rice - Tofu (you can have the same with Pork if you wish to)

There were others too: here is the list of other "Rice & Noodles" which were served to us -

Pad Thai - Vegetables (Chicken/ Prawns)
Spicy Yaki Soba - Vegetables (Chicken / Prawns)
Green Mango & Jasmine rice - Tofu (or Pork)
Thai Basil fried rice (with Chicken)
Korean Spiced Fried Rice Vegetables (Chicken / Prawns)

Non-vegetarians, don't be disappointed. I might not have any beautiful photographs for you, the least I could do is give you a run-down of items served on the menu. Here it goes -

Malaysian Style Chicken Stir Fried with Curry Leaves
Stir Fry Chicken with Chilli Mustard Sauce
Chicken & Asparagus with Ginger lemon Sauce
Fish with Chilli Mustard Sauce
Fish Stir Fried with Hoisin & Thai chilli Sauce
Prawns Stir Fried with Kaffir lime leaves and Thai Red Chillies
Prawns in Creamy Garlic Butter Sauce
Prawns in Tom Yum Sauce
Lamb dumplings Stir fried in Wood Smoked BBQ sauce
Green Curried Tenderloin
Stir Fried Tenderloin with Oyster & Black Bean Sauce

Chef Priyank Chouhan
..and the brain behind designing this monsoon menu (for a limited time only) is Chef Priyank Chauhan - a level-headed, affable person who is open-for-feedback (trust me, not every chef take criticisms in its right stride). He, very intently listened to our opinions on each and every dish and graciously shared his culinary experiences with all of us. I wish him all the very best and hopefully to meet & would love to eat his food again. :-)

Now, I am sure most of you are already wondering - What about the desserts? Of course there were many and here is one which caught our attention the most. "Chocolate Sushi". I am not much of a dessert person, this one I couldn't resist and it tasted absolutely amazing.

Chocolate Sushi, how innovative. Isn't it?

Thank you Mads for taking me along and sharing these pictures with me. Without them, the review would be incomplete.

I sure had a blast.. :-)

Siri's Eat Outs | An Evening at Cafe Coffee Day

"This coffee falls into your stomach, and straightway there is a general commotion. Ideas begin to move like the battalions of the Grand Army of the battlefield, and the battle takes place. Things remembered arrive at full gallop, ensuing to the wind. The light cavalry of comparisons deliver a magnificent deploying charge, the artillery of logic hurry up with their train and ammunition, the shafts of with start up like sharpshooters. Similes arise, the paper is covered with ink; for the struggle commences and is concluded with torrents of black water, just as a battle with powder."

~Honore de Balzac, "The Pleasures and Pains of Coffee"

fresh espresso, brewing

...and you thought Cafe Coffee Day (CCD from now on) is just for kaapi? Let me tell you, gone are such days as they have launched a brand new Summer Menu, to quench your thirst and refresh you from the hot summer heat. Thanks to my dear blogging pal, Mads I have got an opportunity to taste their summer drink collection and here I am with a review of what I think about each one of them.

Be prepared to get surprised and expect the unexpected. Literally speaking. Let me give you a teaser. Ever thought of Kokum in a drink? or Keri (Raw Mango) with jaljeera?.. How about desi thandai? As I said before, expect the unexpected. :-)

I love CCD just for its ambiance. Best place to meet up friends over a cup of coffee and yap to glory.

This post is a review cum photo journey about my experience at CCD. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I made sure I had enough of them to entice you and give you a sneak-peek of what is available at CCD today. It all started with we meeting Felix, manager of Food & Beverage at CCD, an amazing and knowledgeable guy who won the World Barista Championships twice. :-).

You can see him below where he very shyly modeled  for our cameras. The drink in his hand is ahem.. "Kokum Jhatka". Yes you heard it right. and it would be an understatement if I said, I was pleasantly surprised.

Felix, the guy who developed all these amazing drinks at CCD

..and you will love it, if you like Kokum. It is one such thing where either you love it or hate it. there is no middle ground. That is Kokum for you. Personally speaking, I liked it and the taste just grows on you over time. You can get it with soda (Kokum Jhatka: Rs 80) or as a slush (Kokum Crush).

Kokum Crush
Kokum Crush is a little more milder version than the Jhatka. I liked the Jhatka ;-).

Kokum Jhatka

We take our job very seriously *wink*. There is Mads trying to get that perfect shot.

Coming up next is - Keri (Raw Mango). Capturing the flavor of Aam Panna. This again is served two (in fact three, if you count the sundae) ways. - Keri Pop : Rs 80 (with fizzy soda) and Keri Crush (with crushed ice)..Yet again, both taste great, but my personal favorite of all the drinks tasted tonight is - "Keri Pop", a tangy refreshing drink. It has jaljeera which gives it even more interesting taste which is hard to resist. Unlike Kokum drinks where either you simply love it or hate it, this Keri drink is much more appealing-to-the-mass-types.

Keri (Raw Mango) magic

a closeup shot of our favorite drink of the night.

You would want with soda or with ice, it is up to you. Don't miss out on this Keri goodness

Now, now - good news for ice cream lovers. You can have the same kokum, keri or thandai sauces drizzled over a scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy it as a sundae.

Felix is serving us ice cream with keri sauce. Yummyville!

this is how it looks, best of both worlds - ice cream with keri sauce.

The third offering is "Cafe Thandai" - their signature espresso ice cream blended with the iconic thandai and topped with whipped cream.

Last but not the least is - "Thandai Chiller". this is perfect for those who love desi thandai and who want to enjoy the same taste in the form of a delicious drink. It can't get better than that. :-)

After tasting so many drinks and knowing that I don't have that much of a sweet tooth, we got ourselves some warm samosas paired with imli (tamarind) ketchup. Delicious-o!

If you are at CCD and talking about coffee, then one would be curious to know about - how the frothy, beautiful looking latte art is done over the coffee. It is not as easy as it looks. The milk is blended until frothy and with perfect, tactful up-and-down motion of espresso with the milk is what forms these shapes.

these are two leaves and a flower on your coffee. Isn't it cute?

Latte Art, as it called is a fun way to make our everyday coffee a tad bit more interesting.

All in all it was fun evening spent over many fun conversations, tasting summer drinks, few samosas and a cup of coffee.

Finally I leave you all with a famous saying by F. Scott Fitzgerald-

"First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you."

..of course I was referring to a summer drink here ;-).

You got to visit your nearest Cafe Coffee Day and enjoy summer with their desi summer flavors.

Will ya?

until next time,
Siri
