Dates and Sesame Poornalu | Poornam Boorelu | Sukhiyan Recipe

May Lord Ganesha shower his blessings and fulfill all our wishes. :-)

As promised in my yesterday's post, here I am with recipe of Dates and Sesame Poornalu. The traditional stuffing for such poornam boorelu is - (pressure cooked + mashed bengal gram (chana dal), jaggery, shredded coconut with a hint of cardamom powder). These are very commonly made in Andhra households during almost all festivals. The twist of (dates with sesame seed combo) is just as delicious as our classic version and will be a crowd pleaser. Do give them a try.

{Recipe} Dates and Sesame Poornalu | Poornam Boorelu | Sukhiyan

A festival is never complete without a generous serving of a dessert!

Makes around 10-12 poornalu, depending on the size

Ingredients:

For the batter:

1/2 cup rice flour
1/2 cup all purpose flour
a pinch of salt
water - to make a thick, runny batter

For the stuffing:

1/2 cup pitted dates
2 tbsp sesame seeds
2-3 tbsp fine sugar (optional - only if the dates are not sweet enough)

Oil - for deep frying

Preparation:

1. Finely chop the dates into tiny pieces.

2. Dry roast the sesame seeds until the rawness is gone and light golden brown. Cool and grind coarsely. In a small bowl, mix dates, sesame seed mixture and sugar (if using). Make small balls out of them.

3. In a mixing bowl, add the ingredients listed for batter - flour, rice flour, little salt and sufficient water to make a thick batter.

4. Heat enough oil for deep frying. Dip each of the date-sesame balls in the batter and carefully drop in the oil.

5. Reduce heat to low and fry for few minutes until golden brown.

5. Place these on paper towels to drain any excess oil.

6. Serve hot.

Dates and Sesame Poornalu are ready to be devoured.
Notes:

1. Make sure the batter is thick and not too runny or the boorelu may break while frying.
2. Add sugar to stuffing only if the dates are not sweet.
3. For a savory version, you can use mashed potato with salt, green chilli, coriander and lemon juice. i.e potato bonda. taste super yum!.

  4. I came to you blog through foodgawker. Lovely Sukhiyan with a sweet twist in the filling. I have never tried making Sukhiyan as it is labor intensive...eaten only from the comfort of small tea stalls on rainy days. But you have inspired me to try this!
